A Delicious Double Book Launch!!

I must go for this! Why? I'm a fan of Amir Muhammad's writings :) He's funny, witty, intelligent, and he's such a great storyteller! :)

If you're reading this, and would love to go, let's meet there!! :)

The launch details are as below:

ZI Publications presents ...

"ROJAK: Bite-sized stories" by Amir Muhammad

"TAPAI: Travels & Guilty Pleasures of a Fermented Malaysian" by Hishamuddin Rais.

Date: Saturday, June 12th, 2010
Venue: the Annexe, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur.
Time: 12.00pm

About the Books
-- - -- - -- - --

ROJAK - This is not a recipe book. This is a collection of very short fictional stories. The taste can be sweet, juicy, spicy, tart, or crunchy! The flavours of Malaysia, in fact. So if this book could talk, it would say: "Bite Me."

TAPAI - In an age where food has become entertainment television, the wit and wisdom of Hishamuddin Rais is like a proper kitchen knife – always sharp. This wandering bon vivant and former Malaysian exile does not (yet) have his own TV show, choosing instead to record his amazing adventures in writing. This lovingly handpicked collection from his column Tapai in Off The Edge magazine presents a way of looking at the world beyond our food fetish and its lifestyle trappings.

Rais’ grand unified theory of everything links his life on the lam with more recent encounters: a seedy café in Pudu, Christmas in Bangladesh, stalking Akira Kurosawa (posthumously), working in soup kitchens, and discovering a place that sells diamonds and nouvelle cuisine. That’s just for starters. In between this all, he warps time to meet the Darai of the band that accompanied the raising of the Jalur Gemilang on 31st August 1957, amongst other wonderful people.

Naturally, lusty food marks this ageless hippie’s quest: mutton and duck stew Acehnese-style, Ramly burgers, foie gras, truffles, oysters, caviar.… Rais takes the reader on a life-affirming trip that nourishes the soul, like the best tapai in ferment.

First Stardust, Then Coraline, and Now.... (drum roll pleeeease! :))

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK! Yes! It is being adapted as a live-action feature to be written and directed by Neil Jordan! Read about it here:

I'm so excited! I hope it'll be shown here in Malaysia! You rock Gaiman! Arrggh, must get my hands on this book. Yeah, I'm his one of his many fans and yet, haven't read The Graveyard book. SHAME ON ME! :(

If you've not heard of The Graveyard Book, it's a story of a boy called Nobody Owens who's taken in by a cemetery full of ghosts from different centuries. He's being guarded by them, because he's being hunted down by an assassin.

Anyone has a copy? I have Coraline *wink* Wanna exchange? hehe

Authors answer questions they've never been asked before!

Do you know if your favourite author ever write naked? or if they're ever jealous of other writers? Why some never write about sex? I read it all here! Neil Gaiman and Haruki Murakami weren't in the list, so my next choice was Ian Rankin:

How many people have you done away with over the course of your career?
You mean the body count in my books? I've no idea. I think it's quite low – one or two corpses per tome, and each book represents a year in the life of Edinburgh.

Ever dispatched someone and then regretted it?
Often. The prospective member of the Scottish parliament in Set In Darkness – I liked him, but the narrative didn't. Then there was the old priest Rebus used to hang out with – he died of natural causes, but it came as a bit of a shock.

Have you ever been in trouble with the police?
Back when I was writing the first Rebus, they did add me to their files for a short time. I'd gone into a police station to ask a few questions, and it turned out Knots and Crosses bore some similarities to a case that was ongoing back then.

Why do you never write about sex?
I find it embarrassing.

More embarrassing than violence?
God, yes.

So when were you last involved in a real-life punch-up?
I'm usually the one holding the jackets.

If you were going to commit the perfect murder, how would you go about it?
Pick a victim whose absence from the world is going to cause as few ripples as possible.

You've obviously given this some thought.
Keep bugging me with questions and you'll find out.

And I liked Margaret Atwood's answers hehe

Margaret Atwood
Why are you such a pushover for everyone who wants you to do stuff for them?
I was the child who refused to eat her Easter rabbit-shaped cookie because I wanted to talk to it. I should just have learned early to bite the heads off quick. Otherwise the rabbits start telling you their tales, and then it's game over.

Will you never learn?
Apparently not. I still seem to get into the merde, as a result of being too naïve. I think novelists are the people who don't really know what people are talking about much of the time. That's why they write novels – to try to find out.

Do you really go around in a corset, high heels, and a whip, subjugating men, as a 1989 cartoon depicted you?
Not any more. Too old for it. So are the men, poor things.

What happened to the book reviews??

Dear bookaholics,

If you were wondering why this bookaholic is no longer putting up her usual book reviews and interesting bookish finds, and only updates her blog with events, well, it's because I'm very tied up with something else right now.

However, it'll end very soon...and my book reviews will be up again in July :) I'm looking forward to it as I REALLY REALLY MISS READING!!!!

If you have found any good reads recently, please feel free to post your recommendations here or drop me an email :)

Till then, keep reading!!
