My hubby shared this wonderful story with me and I'd like to share it with you too :) There was a farmer who collected horses; he only needed one more breed to complete his collection. One day, he found out that his neighbor had the particular horse breed he needed. So, he constantly bothered his neighbor until he sold it to him. A month later, the horse became ill and he called the veterinarian, who said: "Well, your horse has a virus. He must take this medicine for three days. I'll come back on the 3rd day and if he's not better, we're going to have to put him down." Nearby, the pig listened closely to their conversation. The next day, they gave him the medicine and left. The pig approached the horse and said: "Be strong, my friend. Get up or else they're going to put you to sleep!" On the second day, they gave him the medicine and left. Over 120 years after it was condemned as 'vulgar' and 'unclean', an uncensored version of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray is published by Harvard University Press. Revised after it was condemned in the British press over 130 years ago as "vulgar", "unclean", "poisonous" and "discreditable", an uncensored version of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray has finally been published. Seems that Frankel, associate professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University said "the time is ripe for the publication of Wilde's novel in its uncensored form … It is the version of the novel that Wilde, I believe, would want us to be reading in the 21st century … I'm bringing it out of the closet a little more." I came across these facts about Alice in Wonderland in one of the many versions of the book, and thought they were interesting. So I'd like to share them with you :) #1 The author, Lewis Carroll, whose real name is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was very meticulous and had this habit of making lists and keeping records of everything that he did. He even kept records of all the letters that he wrote - a total of 98,721 letters, from January 1861 until his death in 1898! #2 Mock Turtle soup IS REAL ! It was a popular dish in Victorian times. It was made from parts of a calf. #3 Alice Liddell is the little girl who inspired this story. Read more here . The Story behind Chinese New Year So. What's the story behind Chinese New Year (CNY)? There are various versions of this celebration. According to myths and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a terrible mythical monster called Nian (means 'year'). He would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. A wise old man came to know about it and advised the villagers to ward off the evil Nian by making loud noises with drums and firecrackers and hanging red paper cutouts and scrolls on their doors because the Nian is terrified of the color red. The villagers heeded his advice and the Nian was defeated. Just recently, a colleague of mine came back from a one-week holiday in Korea. I asked her if she visited "those famous 'romantic spots' featured in their drama series." (Mind you, I'm not a fan. I came to know about them through my sister who's one) There are many other places that are made famous because of drama series and books, and have now become tourist trails such as New Zealand ( The Lord of The Rings ), Phi Phi Island ( The Beach ), and recently, Sweden ( Larsson's Millenium trilogy ). Have you visited any one of them? Check this out: World Book Night represents the most ambitious and far-reaching celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland. On Saturday, 5 March 2011, two days after World Book Day, with the full support of the Publishers Association, the Booksellers Association, the Independent Publishers Guild, the Reading Agency with libraries, World Book Day, the BBC and RTE, one million books will be given away by an army of passionate readers to members of the public across the UK and Ireland. The book give-away will comprise 40,000 copies of each of the 25 carefully selected titles, to be given away by 20,000 ‘givers’, who will each distribute 48 copies of their chosen title to whomever they choose on World Book Night.
