Decatur Book Fest 2012

Image
It has been a loooonnnnggg while since this blog's been updated...One of the reasons, well, I haven't had any luck in reading a good book. I thought I'd have some luck with Wicked by Gregory Maguire (Fantasy), hoping it'd be as yummy as  The Bartimaeus Trilogy , but I was wrong. I have problems finishing the last chapter now...Argghhh... Ok, so what's new? As stated above, the Decatur Book Fest 2012 that was held recently in Decatur, GA from Aug 31 - Sept 2. And I've gotta check it out. My hubby and I took the train and to no surprise, there were big crowds in every station! One, because there was a football match. Two because there was also a big event - the Dragon Con that was happening in the same weekend. (My hubby and I will definitely check out Dragon Con next year, with me in COSTUME! Muahahaha) So was the Book Fest good? I can't say it wasn't because books were sold at rock-bottom prices from as low as $5!! Of course I bought a few haha...

Banned Books Week (September 24 - October 1, 2011)

Image
Heard of 'Banned Book Weeks' before? Well, Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,000 books have been challenged since 1982. During the last week of September every year, hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the US draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events. The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Since the inception of Banned Books Week in 1982, libraries and bookstores throughout the country have staged local read-outs as part of thei...

World Book Day: When, Why and Wow...

Image
First of all, HAPPY WORLD BOOK DAY EVERYONE!! :) Let's spread the joy of reading, not only today, but every other day by sharing great reads with your friends and family, also, if you have too many on your shelves, give them to those in need...I came across this on guardian.co.uk and thought that I'd share it with you... "With or without TV debates, most thoughts at present in the UK are turning to the choice we will make in the forthcoming general election. However, the stark fact is that very many people in the UK will not be a part of that process; not because they don't want to necessarily, but because they lack the most basic skills to do so. They can't read. They cannot make a choice. It is a truly terrible democratic deficit." (More...) The thought of parting with your favourite books can be painful. To be honest, I had problems giving mine away. But just thinking of the impact it can make on a person's life helped the 'parting' a whole lot...

Ooooo I feel so guilty. This weekend, I went to two places to splurge. One of which is Pay Less's Clearance Sales which Jien Sing told me about...THANK YOU! :) Mostly non-fiction. Oh...and guess what I found in one of the books? A lesson plan from 1974!! Type-written! Cool, right? ;) I tried looking for a love letter or some sort...but nothing much :( Can't wait to read Marv though...Loved the illustrations! The other 2 titles, The Metamorphosis and Girl with a Pearl Earring came highly recommended by two friends of mine...So I thought, why not, since it's only RM5 and RM6 per book hehe :P All that for ONLY RM47 :D Thanks to my dear hubby for bringing me there and paying for all of them! *big grin* Next, my loot from Big Bookshop from Atria in Petaling Jaya...(Thanks Lai Peen for the recommendation :) And thx hubby for allowing me to splurge, once again LOL) THIS PLACE...I MUST MUST BLOG ABOUT :) But first, let me take a picture of the books I bought. Popular Book Fair Not That Fair

Image
Okay, if you’re planning to go to the recent Popular Book Fair, please be very wary of the prices, because some of the prices weren't correct, maybe due to human error, I'm not sure, because my mom spotted it and she only mentioned it to me when we came home. My mom told me one of the cookbooks (Yum Yum) was priced at RM15, and a 20% discount was given, so the book was RM12 after discount. She remembered paying lesser than RM12 for this book, but wasn’t quite sure. When we came home, she double-checked and realised, that the price should be RM10 (printed on the book itself, as shown in the picture. Yeah, it's really blur coz the print is small), not RM15 (as stated on Popular's price tag on the book). This has happened before when my mom bought a female magazine, and Popular tagged it at RM8, when it should be lower (as printed on the magazine, but my mom didn't notice it. If I recall correctly, this happened a few years back), and gave a 20% discount. I'm just...

BookXcess is Spring Cleaning

Image
I was half expecting a long queue outside BookXcess, Amcorp Mall in PJ. Thank goodness I was wrong. If you're planning to check out their Spring Cleaning sales (26th Feb - 10th Mar 2010), go during their off-peak hours - Lunch hour 12-ish till abt 3pm. Yeah, I was there for about 2 hours or so. I had, at first, 4 books in my hand, only RM9.90 each! Yep. But the kiasu me wanted to stretch my ringgit to the max so I had my husband google all the titles to check out if they were worth my ringgit (Cuz you'll never know if they are going to have an 'Opening' / 'New Location' Sales haha In the end, I picked 1 out of that 4 :P The book I decided worth my RM9.90 was 'Dream Angus: The Celtic God of Dreams by Alexander McCall Smith. Overall reviews on Amazon.com were 4-4.5/5. The other books I decided to forgo were Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake (don't ask me why), John Burdett's Bangkok Tattoo and Robert Harris's The Ghost. Before leaving the shop w...

Big Bad Wolf Sales: I came out EMPTY-HANDED

Image
After queuing for 30 minutes to get in, I came out empty handed. The sales sucked lah...Not worth the time and wait. The previous one was better - more books, more variety, and more spacious. If you haven't been there, don't bother wasting your time if you've been to their previous one and the recent Pearson Warehouse Sales. My verdict for this sales? 1 out of 5. I was so disappointed with it, that my hubby decided to bring me to Kinokuniya instead to satisfy my insatiable hunger of seeing stacks of GOOD books. Go there only if you're thinking of getting a great variety of children's books and probably, magazines too. Their fiction selection was disappointing! Anyways, this time's categorising of books was better than the previous one's. If you hate queuing, go around 3-ish, but be prepared to find a fewer selection of books. If you go in the morning, be prepared to queue. Some however, loved it. They managed to get some really good reads, but I think they w...
